Rockin' in St. Joe

Well, rockin' might be a bit of a stretch. It all is kind of an oxymoron, really. St Joe is a small town about 1o miles from my house, and it is anything but rocking, despite the name of its festival. It is the home of St Ben's the college and of course, St Joe's the church, and to say that it has a strong Catholic presence is somewhat of an understatement. So to have the festival called St. Joe Rocks is almost funny. I mean come on...the main show tonight features Bobby Vee, a local legend of sorts. Perhaps his best known hit is "Devil or Angel." From 1960. Yep, they were going to rock in St Joe tonight. The crowd was mostly over 50, so they were all old.

But the real reason that people came to the festival was because of beer, and lots of it. I guess it was a typical German Catholic festival. I avoided the beer, though I did eat a famous Joe Burger, the gastronomical highlight of the festival. Actually, the fries were above average, and it was nice to see yet another small town in Minnesota.
